JayaChander Madhurakavi obtained his BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) in 1995 from India. During his 10 years of practice in India, he travelled across the country to work with some of the most eminent homeopaths in India. After moving to Australia, Madhurakavi has established his own practice at Wentworthville, NSW and is continuing to offer his services to the community.
Madhurakavi’s grandfather, was one of the first homeopathic doctors in the region of Telangana, India. In 1949, just after India won its independence, he established his own homeopathic pharmacy and clinic called Chandra Homoeo Stores. During the early 1950s Chandra Homoeo Stores and clinic became a well known clinic throughout the region. Many people were attracted to homeopathy and became great advocates of its therapeutic benefits. In the wish of Jayachander’s grandfather, his two sons Dr. Vidyasagar (my father) and Dr. Dayakar qualified as homeopathic doctors and joined state government employment as Medical Officers. Jayachander’s father resigned from his government job after a year in order to continue the legacy of Chandra Homeo stores established by his father ; his brother, however, continued to serve as a Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officer, and finally retired as Principal of the government homeopathic medical college and hospital in the city Rajahmundry. After retirement, he joined my father’s clinic where both of them continue to see hundreds of patients every day.
Almost 75 years ago Jayachander’s grandfather established his principles of practice based upon an understanding that any imbalance in body, mind and spirit can manifest in an imbalance in the physical and emotional health of an individual.
Jayachander has been a qualified homeopath for over 25 years, and as a third generation practitioner, has a combined experience of over 100 years of cumulative family knowledge and skills. At about 10 years old he started to work at the front desk of the pharmacy and clinic with his father’s staff and had the opportunity to listen to enquiries from patients and customers who came in to buy medicines and receive treatment. By 14 years old he was already answering many questions raised at the front desk about homeopathic remedies, herbal medicines and providing information on the manufacturing, supply and dosage instructions to the patients at his father’s clinic.
His journey in homeopathy began as an apprenticeship. After his high school education he joined a homeopathic college for formal training. After his 2nd year of studying medicine, he had the advantage of seeing patients with his father. As is often the case in life, he learned more from observing his father’s patients than by just reading the medical books . Working alongside his father, he was able to witness the extraordinary benefits of homeopathy, which gave him a lot of confidence in prescribing and treating his patients.
Jayachander completed his Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS), a 5 ½ year medical degree, and joined his family practice in 1995. During his 10 years of practice in India, his father encouraged him to extend his knowledge and experience by traveling throughout India to work with some of the most eminent homeopaths at that time. He had the opportunity to work with Dr Kartar Singh (National Homoeo Stores, Chandini Chowk, New Delhi), Dr Kulkarni (Roy Homoeo Pharmacy, Colaba, Mumbai), Dr Koppikar (Chennai), and Professor NMK Suri (Hyderabad). Initially he was learning from them but later, as is the case with education, they were also learning from Jayachander and their interactions mutually benefited all of them. During this time he had the chance to work with and learn from some eminent physicians: cardiologists, neurologists, endocrinologists, ENT specialists and orthopedic specialists. These rare opportunities were due to his father’s great reputation as a renowned homeopath.
Having practiced over 10 years in India and 15 years in Australia, I realized that (on a larger scale) all humans are physiologically the same, yet every individual is unique in their response to the World around them. Environmental and lifestyle factors are more important than genetic factors in individualizing a person. Even children born to the same mother are different in terms of emotions, likes, dislikes, relationship to the environment, relation to cold and heat. Similarly, not all diseases are the same. For example, not all fevers are the same, nor all emotions and sufferings. From this perspective, the art and science of case taking is vital. Homeopathy is both an art and a science: individualizing a patient, selecting the correct remedy and repetition of the dose requires a skill that comes from experience. It also requires thorough knowledge in investigative procedures and pathophysiology as they apply in a homeopathic context. Common clinical examination procedures are an important part of a consultation. For example, taking blood pressure or listening to the chest with a stethoscope. Using a simple tuning fork can help determine if hearing loss is conductive (middle ear fluid, otitis media perforation) or sensorineural (nerve damage). Knowing the relevance of the results of a CT scan, MRI or X-ray. I do not know where homeopathy stands in the future but this is the only science that I have known ever since I was a child. I’ve always thought about pursuing homeopathy after my high school graduation. After my formal education in Homeopathy, it was just a matter of learning and practicing every day. My family history has given me the confidence and the encouragement to practice homeopathy, but nothing can be learned just by earning a degree, It is only learned by practice. As long as I am being guided by that experience, and as long as I am working I will continue to practice Homeopathy.
